Richard G Rockefeller Conservation Internship Program: Call for Summer 2025 Intern Host Organizations
|
MCHT's Richard G. Rockefeller Conservation Internship program is a paid summer internship program that provides opportunities to underserved Maine college-age people pursuing undergraduate, certificate, or associate degrees. We define “underserved” as students who don’t have opportunities equivalent to those offered at more highly resourced-colleges.
This year, the program will be capably and cordially coordinated by MCHT's Danielle Arroyo (pictured in the header of this email with 2024 interns). Danielle joined MCHT late last year, so though she wasn't involved in host application process she did oversee the interns all season. You can read about past intern experiences on the MCHT website here.
MCHT hopes to place 11 interns with 11 conservation organizations next summer. Each intern will work 40 hours per week for 10 weeks, including a week of training. Participating organizations are required to contribute $1,000 of the $6, 400 intern payment and provide housing if the intern does not live in the area of placement and requires it. Internship positions will be listed on our jobs page, likely in early 2025.
MLTN will host an information session for prospective host organizations via Zoom next Wednesday, November 13th, at 12:00pm. Even if you're not sure whether you'll apply, we encourage you to attend this session. Pre-registration is required. Learn more here.
We're excited to bring this awesome opportunity to you! Angela, Jeff, Donna and Katia

Election Day Recap
|
Big changes in Washington, mostly status quo in Maine, and approval of $30 million bond highlight election results this November
While voters across the country approved leadership changes in the White House and the US Senate, Mainers once again re-elected Senator King, Congresswoman Pingree, and Congressman Golden. Votes are still being counted to determine the results for Maine’s legislature and a few races will likely go to recounts. However, it appears that Democrats will continue to be the majority in both chambers, but this time more narrowly. What will the election results mean for conservation initiatives in 2025? We will all find out soon enough.
In the meantime, let’s all celebrate voter approval of the $30 million Maine Trails Bond. It will be great to see this investment being made over the next few years as these funds enhance and expand recreational trails around the state. Thanks to all of you who supported this effort! Let's all get out and explore a Maine trail this weekend and appreciate this accomplishment.

Urgent Tax Law Update for Land Trusts
|
Thursday, November 21, 2024 via Zoom 12:00-1:00pm Cost: FREE for LTA members
Over the last two years, the tax landscape for land trusts and landowners donating land or conservation easement has changed dramatically. In 2022, Congress passed the Integrity Act, which disallows deductions for certain transactions. And on October 8 of this year, the IRS released new regulations requiring land trusts to report a different category of transactions if the land trusts meet the criteria of being “material advisors.”
For land trusts and landowners, each of these legal regimes has different exceptions. What does a land trust need to do to stay in compliance with the law and do their job? The Land Trust Alliance is here to help! In this webinar, Conservation Defense Network and Tax Manager Diana Norris will layout the different requirements and suggest strategies managing this complex situation.
